1990’s - Milk production abandoned as too destructive to local environment

Ten years ago these were dispersed and milk production abandoned as it was too destructive of the local environment and of the parkland to the north of Lowther Castle which has virtually unlimited public access.

The build-up of the beef breeding herd was checked slightly by Tuberculosis eradication, and then seriously checked, by which time there were 450 cows, by the brucelosis eradication scheme which cut the herd back to about 250.
