Turkeys

The majority of turkeys reared for Christmas are reared in the same fashion as conventional chickens – indoors in large numbers and with high-energy, medicated feed.

Christmas is a special occasion and we believe that the food should reflect this. We looked at our organic chicken enterprise and decided to grow turkeys to the same exacting standards.

Our turkeys are Lakeland Bronzes, a much slower growing strain of bird than you may be used to. The chicks hatch in early July and for the first few weeks are kept indoors in a heated environment. As soon as they are strong enough they are given access to organic grassland. As they get older they range further and further. The greatest recorded distance they have ranged from their shed is 300m (so far). The birds really benefit from being allowed to roam. They que up in the morning in anticipation of the door being opened (they are shut-in at night to prevent predation). Once released the birds stroll towards the grass – on reaching it they generally behave in one of 3 ways: they will immediately start start grazing, they will start preeing themselves and showing off, or they will take off like fully-loaded Lancaster bombers. In the evening there is a steady drift back to the shed (like sun-bathers going back to their hotels when the sun starts to set!).

They have constant access to barns with straw bedding, organic feed and fresh water.

The birds are reared to at least 22 weeks of age, the carcasess are then hung to mature before being packaged and labelled.
